Make-up Tutorial / How to Get a Glamorous Smoky Eye

A smoky eye is a timeless look that's perfect for a night out, a special event, or whenever you want to feel a little more dramatic. This step-by-step guide will help you create a classic, sultry smoky eye that’s easy to master.

Step 1: Lay a Luminous Base

Start by applying a pearly, light-colored eyeshadow across your entire eyelid, from your lash line up to your crease. This creates a bright, shimmery base that will make the darker shadows pop and help with blending later.

Step 2: Build the Foundation

Next, apply a second, slightly darker eyeshadow shade—think a medium gray or a warm taupe—over the same area. This step adds depth and prepares your eye for the main event. Be sure to blend the edges so there are no harsh lines.

Step 3: Define with Darkness

Now for the drama! Using an even darker shade—like a deep charcoal, a rich plum, or a chocolate brown—focus on the outer corner of your eye. Use a fluffy brush to blend this color inward, creating a "V" shape that extends slightly into your crease. This is what gives the smoky eye its signature gradient and shape.

Step 4: Line and Define

Grab your favorite eyeliner and apply a clean, thin line along your upper lash line. This doesn't have to be a thick, dramatic wing. Its purpose is to define your eye and create the illusion of fuller lashes. A gel or liquid liner works best for a precise look.

Step 5: Smoke It Out on the Bottom

Using a thin, angled brush, take the same black or dark brown eyeshadow you used in Step 3 and lightly sweep it along your lower lash line. This mirrors the top lid and ties the entire smoky look together. The key here is to keep it soft and blended—you're going for a subtle smoke, not a harsh line.

Step 6: The Finishing Touch

Finally, curl your lashes and apply a few coats of black mascara. Wiggle the wand from the base of your lashes to the tip to add volume and length. This final step opens up your eyes and completes the look.

And there you have it! A beautiful, blended smoky eye that's sure to turn heads. Practice makes perfect, so don't be afraid to experiment with different shades and techniques to find the perfect smoky eye for you.
